5 LOCAL SECRETS OF A 12 APOSTLES HELICOPTER PILOT
by LOUIS SAUNDERS-LODERAs a pilot for 12 Apostles Helicopters, I get a birds’ eye view of one of the world’s most spectacular coastlines almost every day. How lucky am I?
It’s a real privilege to fly guests over famous landmarks and to show them some lesser known locations, too. And, if we get to see whales and other marine life putting on a show, that’s even more special!
I enjoy being part of our passengers’ helicopter experience, especially when they first see the 12 Apostles after we’ve been flying over the farmlands. These gigantic limestone structures just seem to ‘appear’ and take your breath away.
I’m often asked by passengers what I like to do around the region when I’m not in the sky, so I thought I’d share my 5 favourite activities!
1. Swimming at the Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands is a wonderful spot a little just west of the Peterborough township. The bay is often not as popular as the larger attractions but as equally beautiful. Lovely beaches and good snorkeling spots make for a winning day out. The water is usually very clear and calm making a great swimming spot.
2. Flying over Cape Otway Lightstation
This working lighthouse is 20 metres high, so when we fly over it in the helicopter, it really puts into perspective the magnitude of the shipwreck coast.
It also gives passengers a rare opportunity to see the unique coastline of the Otways area, which is equally as stunning as the vertical cliffs near the 12 Apostles.
From the ground, you can climb to the top of the Cape Otway Lightstation for yet another perspective of the coastline, looking over the raw and rugged clifftops. Just hold onto your hat!
3. Having breakfast at Grassroots Deli Café
I love the breakfast menu at Grassroots Deli Café in Port Campbell. There’s nothing better than a morning coffee and some local bacon and eggs. It’s a great place to hang out for both locals and visitors.
4. Sow and Piglets Brewery (Port Campbell Hostel)
The Sow and Piglets is a local brewery that serves German style beer; a very refreshing treat after a big day of exploring in nature. They also serve delicious pizzas to conquer your hunger while you quench your thirst.
5. Peterborough Golf Course
On the southern edge of Peterborough is a lovely nine-hole golf course with spectacular views of the coast. The course is very well maintained and cheap to access, which makes it popular with the locals. So, if you want a leisurely hit of golf on your holiday, it’s a good option!
