Meet the locals in our dairy heartland
Cobden is the home of Western Star Butter an iconic Australian brand that has been made with the same fresh local ingredients for 100 years. The town is surrounded by the rolling hills and volcanic lakes that commence just north of the coast, located just 30 minutes north of the Great Ocean Road and 2.5 hours from Melbourne via the Princes Hwy Cobden is an ideal base for a Great Ocean Road adventure. Cobden's significant "making" history can also be enjoyed at the wonderful Pioneer Dairy Park whose opening times co-incide with it's neighbour the iconic Cobden Miniature Railway on the 3rd Sunday of every month.
More Hunter than Gatherer?
If foraging for tasty treats isn't your thing we suggest you should ask a local for some tips and try and catch your own. Cobden is central to some high quality stocked fishing lakes including Lake Elingamite, Lake Bullen Merri, Lake Purrumbete and even Cobden Lake right in the heart of town. Now one has to think that local fishing must be good with a local angling club that has been in existence for 91 years!
Species targeted by local and visiting anglers include trout and chinook salmon which are excellent table fish. Fishing by boat and bank is possible and trophy fish are regularly caught.
Lakes and Walks
Cobden Lake
Cobden Lake is fed by Cobden Creek and has a paved walk and viewing platforms around it's circumference. Visitors can enjoy reflections from and enjoy the shade of the many mature trees and picnic tables in the surrounding parkland.
Lake Elingamite
The crater rim above the lake offers great views and a strong impression of the volcanic nature of the lake. There is a boat ramp and jetty which can be a little difficult to access in low water levels. Bank fishing is difficult in most conditions but is possible from a jetty near the boat ramp.
Lake Purrumbete
Lake Purrumbete is an attractive volcanic lake that fishes well for trout and chinook salmon. With an average depth of 45m and a maximum depth of 60m it offers good angling opportunities from bank and boat.
Camperdown to Timboon Rail Trail
The completed 34km Camperdown to Timboon trail is a wonderful family adventure, dotted with statuesque trestle bridges and spellbinding scenery.
Tandarook Botanic Gardens
